You Looked Up!

YOU LOOKED UP! AND WHY DID THAT BALL GO THERE?

One of my favorite things as a teacher is when a woman says "My husband says I didn't hit a good shot because I looked up" and she has no idea what that means.  Although that may be true eventually you have to look up, it's just when.  The goal is to keep your eye on the ball until you make impact and then allow your head to follow your shot rather than lead your shot.  I like to tell people to keep their eye on the golf ball and listen for impact, this helps to keep your head down and your eyes on the ball until the club head meets the golf ball.  A smooth and slow take away and a slight pause at the top of your backswing allows you swing 100% through your shot and make solid impact.

Another idea to keep in mind is that the ball will typically go where your mind goes.  If your mind is on a target down the middle of the fairway then your ball will tend to go where your mind is.  IF YOUR MIND WONDERS, YOUR BALL MAY WONDER ALSO!  Keep your mind on your target and swing away.  When hitting shots into a green you have to believe that the ball is going in the hole.  The smaller your target the smaller the miss.  For example, if your target is the hole you may miss but the ball will most likely be on the green somewhat close.  If your target is the green, you may miss the green and end up off the green in a place you don't want to be.

Here's a trick that I do for myself and I teach my students

When hitting balls at the range - set up the logo or the practice stripes to the back where you make impact.  This will help you keep your eye on the ball longer.   You can also do this on the tee box and it has helped me tremendously.

The other thought that I learned from Dr. Bob Rotella is to listen for impact.  Once that ball is on the way your head can follow, it just can't be the leader.

I hope these short tips help.  If you need more help with your game visit your local teaching professional.
