TIMING IS CRITICAL!
When teaching I want golfers to understand how path and clubface affect the ball but to not concentrate on this to the point that you don't allow your natural swing to just happen. I really just want people to watch the ball and make adjustments to their swing based on where that ball has gone.
Basically when hitting a longer shot what direction the ball goes in the first half of it's flight is path and what the ball does in the second half of it's flight is clubface at impact. We'll address this issue again in a later lesson.
I am talking from a right handed golfer's point of view so if you're left handed, well you know, do the opposite. All teenagers must be left handed doing the opposite of what we tell them, lol.
Timing is everything! Every shot in golf requires acceleration through the ball. Many people try to control their shot taking the club back quickly and slowing down through their swing, wrong do the opposite. Acceleration! I will remind you of this in all areas of the game so you will probably hear it again and again. Taking your club back smoothly, pausing at the top of your swing, letting go through the ball and squaring the club face at impact is timing. The faster you swing that club back the bigger the chance of not catching up at the top and boom that ball will usually end up offline.
I love Fred Couples, his swing is so smooth and easy. He has plenty of distance to be one of the best golfers of his time because he swings smooth and accelerates through his shot and boy is he accurate. Guys, the smoother you swing the farther the ball usually goes and it usually ends up in the fairway. Hmmm, ball in play! How many strokes will that save you?
Trying to keep it as simple as possible when you take your club back it should swing out and up, hinging at the wrists. Butt of the club should be pointing towards the ground and your right thumb towards your right ear. As much as possible keep your left arm straight and let all the hinge happen at your wrists. Here's where the timing comes in. Swing out and release or roll your hands to square the club face. If the ball hooks (goes left at the end) your hands are too active and if the ball slices (goes right at the end) your clubface came through open or to the right because you didnt release. Practice slowly swinging the club through and watch the clubface at the very center or bottom of your swing to view what the club head looks like.
I know this is a lot to understand. If you have more questions please feel free to email me and I will would be happy to help you further if I can.
