Ball Flight Rules

WHY DID THAT BALL GO THERE - THE KEY IS BALL FLIGHT RULES

No matter what level a golfer is when they come to me for lessons I always teach them ball flight rules. For those of you who are more experienced this is obvious but for new golfers they just keep hitting the ball hoping it will fix itself. My goal as a teacher is for you to understand why that ball does what it does so when it gets offline you know how to fix it.

Ball flight is a combination of path of your swing and club face at impact. If you swing across your body and the club goes to the the left where will that ball go? Left correct? So swing your club out to your target and keep the path of your swing slightly from an inside to an outside position. I love watching Phil Mickelson because he has such a great smooth swing and you can always see his club head in it's finish position swinging out to his target.

OK , so club face at impact. You experienced golfers understand this but new golfers have no awareness of what this means. If you set your club down supporting the club on the back of the grip it will set up squarely or with the club face pointing out to your target. If the face of the club is even slightly pointing the the left, or what we call closed, the ball will go left. On the same token if the club is set up open or to the right the ball will leak out to the right no matter how square you hit it.

I see many new golfers who set up correctly but grab that club so tight that it closes it before they swing. Remember to grab your club as if you had a bird in your hands, tight enough that it didn't fly away but not so tight that you kill it, lol.

Please before you leave remember that we want new people to enjoy this game. They don't understand or know the things that more experienced golfers know or think they know so encourage them to go see their local PGA Professional and learn correctly from the beginning.

See you on the links!
